Musical Roster Spots

So Paul Cousineau of The DiaTribe released his annual Sound of Music post,  listing a song to represent each player. Anthony Castrovince one-upped him by listing a Bruce Springsteen song for every player. I’m not going to be posting Bruce songs (although I did do one for the opening lineup) but I wanted to get in on the fun. Here we go (artist listed first, followed by song title):

Song for the Team – MGMT – Kids

Comment: I posted this about a month ago, but it still stands. The focus of this season should be developing the kids. “Enjoy yourself/Take only what you need from it”

Asdrubal Cabrera  – Birdman and Trick Daddy – Tuck Ya Ice (Chop n’ Screw Mix)

Comment: Mostly for that gigantic necklace that AC wears, but also because as Paul over at The DiaTribe says, Cabrera just has that swagga about him.

Grady Sizemore – Tegan and Sara – Back In Your Head

Comment: Could have gone with a number of different songs here, but I picked this one because I feel this year Sizemore will put himself back in the heads of baseball fans with a great season.

Shin-Soo Choo – Dashboard Confessional – Again I Go Unnoticed

Comment: Because I see Sizemore having a good season and I can’t see this team having too many All-Stars, I think Choo is again going to go unnoticed in the All-Star selection process. Not saying he’ll have a bad year, just saying he’ll be overlooked.

Travis Hafner – Soundgarden – Burden In My Hand

Comment: Hafner is a burden on the Indians, and he could lessen the load if he remembers how to hit.

Jhonny Peralta – Primus – My Name Is Mud

Comment: Haha, I was having trouble with Peralta and chose this song because his name IS mud to Tribe fans right now.

Matt LaPorta – John Mayer Trio – Good Love Is On The Way

Comment: Chosen because LaPorta looks like he’s just about ready, and if he’s as advertised, then good love is indeed on the way.

Luis Valbuena – Our Lady Peace – Is Anybody Home?

Comment: Another hard one to pick, you have to wonder if Valbuena can spark himself to silence all his critics and prove he belongs on this team. Right now his hold on second base seems tenuous.

Lou Marson – Queens of the Stone Age – Make It Wit Chu

Comment: Marson just wants to make it with this club and make them forget they have Carlos Santana waiting in the wings. Speaking of Santana…

Carlos Santana – Santana – Smooth

Comment: I am GOING to make Santana’s nickname be “Smooth.”

Michael Brantley – The Smiths – How Soon Is Now?

Comment: The Indians are taking a gamble by risking that Brantley is indeed ready to handle the everyday LF job. Makes me wonder if it’s too soon, but apparently now isn’t soon enough for the Tribe.

Andy Marte – The Killers – Andy, You’re a Star

Comment: Kinda self explanatory. The former stud prospect finds himself clinging to a roster spot as the utility corner infielder.

Russell Branyan – Kanye West – Gold Digger

Comment: “He takes my money/When I’m in need…”

Fausto Carmona – Nine Inch Nails – Mr. Self Destruct

Comment: Carmona is Mr. Self Destruct. Other than a hip injury in 2008, most of his problems have been with his head. Only Carmona can save himself from himself.

Justin Masterson – Traffic – Dear Mr. Fantasy

Comment: Masterson being a starting pitcher is the Indians’ fantasy. The Red Sox didn’t think he could do it, but the Indians are going to run him into the ground trying.

David Huff – Peter, Paul and Mary – Puff The Magic Dragon

Comment: Well duh… where do you think Huff the Magic Lefty came from?

Kerry Wood – Radiohead – Bulletproof … I Wish I Was

Comment: Imagine if Kerry Wood never got hurt. He’d be one of the best pitchers the game had ever seen. He never woulda landed on the Indians, but that may be a good thing.

Chris Perez – The Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter

Comment: I just always thought that’d be a cool song for a closer to come out to.

Raffy Perez – Jay-Z featuring Faith Evans and Notorious BIG – A Dream

Comment: Which was the dream – 2009 or 2007-08?

Aaron Laffey – Ghetto Boys – Damn It Feels Good To Be a Gangsta

Comment: Just because of the way Laffey Taffy wears his hats, flat-brimmed and cocked to the side. Plus he’s gotta feel pretty good about making the team.

Jake Westbrook – Elliot Smith – A Fond Farewell

Comment: As I’ve mentioned before, I think this is Jake’s last go-round with the Tribe, one way or the other. And I chose to think about the good times we had with Westbrook, rather than the past two years he sat on his ass collecting $22 million.  Make it a gooden’ Jake.
