You're right, a good starter is more valuable than a good reliever. But Masterson simply cannot be called a good starter based off this year. You can't simply say, "Well, we suck, let's keep trotting out Masterson and hope he gets good." You not only run the risk of ruining the pitcher, but you're also blocking other guys who deserve a shot in the rotation. You can't take this good stretch he's had and say that Justin found "it." He did the same thing last season, and then he stumbled out of the gates this year. The Red Sox were willing to part with Masterson for a reason: he's a reliever.

Masterson is going to be a starter, get over it. You pointed out already what he has done in his last 7 starts. He's really inconsistent, but I'd rather have an inconsistent starter on this team than a great reliever. It might not sound like it makes sense but it does. Starters are wayy more valuable. As soon as the Indians peg Masterson as a reliever his overall value goes way down, both within the organization and outside the organization. Since we suck, they might as well keep him in the rotation and hope for more good days than bad days. Economically, it makes sense for the Tribe.

Also, for some reason I've been able to skip a lot of Masterson's bad starts and I've seen probably 3 or 4 of his really good starts...when he's on, he looks great. It's not like he's Jermey Sowers and you are praying the batter screws up so we can get an out. Masterson's pitches have movement and when he's on, he looks like a top/middle of the rotation guy. Too early (and too bad of a team) to give up on that.
