Indians Remove Three From 40-Man Roster
Actual Indians news!! The Indians have outrighted RHPs Hector Ambriz, Anthony Reyes, and C/OF Chris Gimenez off their 40-man roster. Because this is the second outright for Gimenez and Reyes, they have the option of becoming free agents. Ambriz remains under team control. These aren’t surprising moves. Ambriz wasn’t going to be a factor this year after undergoing Tommy John surgery this offseason. Reyes would have been arbitration-eligible had he remained on the roster (and you know the Indians couldn’t let that happen). And Gimenez just kind of sucks. But the Indians have to get the 40-man roster set by [...]
On Tuesday the Arizona Diamondbacks named former Tribe ace and AAA pitching coach Charles Nagy their major league pitching coach. Some may remember his days dominating the American League in the early-to-mid 90s, including starting the 1996 All-Star game (which, until 2010, was the last time the NL won). Others probably choose to resent him for giving up the winning run in the 11th inning of Game Seven of the 1997 World Series. Regardless, Chuck Nagy was a big part of those powerhouse teams in the 90s, and he did a damn good job as the pitching coach in Columbus [...]
Is It Time to Sell High on Shin-Soo Choo?
I hate commenting on baseless rumors and inane message board posts. People get all worked up about it when there’s never any truth behind the rumors or ideas. It’s usually best to ignore them. However on an Indians message board that I used to frequent, I saw an interesting trade idea that made me pause. It seems like a trade both sides would agree is fair. But that doesn’t necessarily mean both sides would agree to the deal. Indians recieve: Phil Hughes, Jesus Montero Yankees receive: Shin-Soo Choo Don’t throw your laptop across the room yet, Tribe fans. Yes, this [...]
Indians News And Notes
Some quick hits on things that have happened to the Indians lately: The Indians completed the Kerry Wood deal with the Yankees, receiving a pair of minor leaguers, infielder Matt Cusick and RHP Andrew Shive. Don’t get excited, Tribe fans, these guys are strictly throw-ins. Cusick is 24 and can’t hit and Shive is 24, in Class A ball, and had Tommy John surgery. Sweet. No, what you should get excited over is the money the Indians saved. The Yankees ended up picking up about $3 million of Wood’s $3.6 million remaining on his contract. Wood was never going to [...]
All The Money Or The Simple Life Honey
As we find ourselves on the eve of the World Series most likely to be started by a former Cleveland Indians Cy Young winner (Cliff Lee) and a former Cleveland Indians draftee (Tim Lincecum) I found myself bored with the usual “What are the Cleveland Indians offsesason needs?” and “which stopgap third baseman should the Indians sign?” blog posts that litter the Indians section of the Internet. So, bored, I found myself in a bit of an argument with my buddy, who we’ll just call Doug, who is a Tigers fan. He wanted the Tigers to sign someone like Jayson [...]
Alomar Jr. In The Running To Be Next Blue Jays Manager
Source: Yardbarker.com A bit of old(er) news, but Indians first base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. is believed to be a finalist for the Toronto Blue Jays’ manager position. However, most of the rumors I’ve read today have Boston pitching coach John Farrell as being the choice. Can’t really say how I feel about the job Sandy has done this year. I’m not sure how to judge a good first base coach, and Alomar only got to work with prized prospect Carlos Santana for about two months. Still, it was nice to see a familiar face from the Jacobs Field “Era [...]
Looking Back at What Was: Bullpen
Source: Yardbarker.com This is the eleventh in a series of posts looking back at the realities of the Indians 2010 season. We’ll look at what was hoped for, what actually happened, and what the expectations are going forward at the position in 2011. Now former Indians GM and current team president Mark Shapiro once said that bullpens are very fickle in nature year in and year out (I’m paraphrasing). After watching the 2010 Cleveland Indians bullpen, I’d have to say he’s right. Some of the guys the Indians went through probably don’t have much of a future with this club, [...]
Hey Cliff Lee, Where Were You in 2007?
Source: Yardbarker.com I’m going to take a break from the “Looking Back at What Was” series for a day and talk about what most baseball fans are talking about today: the brilliance that was Cliff Lee last night. Look, I get it, it’s hard to watch Lee in a Rangers uni mowing down Yankees as if they were butter in a blender and not wonder what might have been. See, as I’m sure you’re well aware of, Clifton Phifer Lee was a member of the Cleveland Indians, from 2002 up until July 2009. But the Cliff Lee that Indians fans [...]
Looking Back at What Was: Left Field
Source: Yardbarker.com This is the tenth in a series of posts looking back at the realities of the Indians 2010 season. We’ll look at what was hoped for, what actually happened, and what the expectations are going forward at the position in 2011 The Indians trotted out three main guys as their left fielders in 2010. Trevor Crowe and Michael Brantley weren’t very productive (although Brantley did turn it on once he took over full time in center field) and the one guy who was semi-productive, Austin Kearns, was traded to the Yankees in July. Yes, left field continues to [...]
Link Fix 10/14/10
Hopefully you’ve been enjoying Deep Left Field’s position by position season-in-review series. That series will continue tomorrow (and if you haven’t checked out Marc’s rundown of the Indians starting rotation yet, you most certainly should), but I think we’re long overdue for a Tribe Link Fix. As always, this is what the Internet is saying about your Cleveland Indians. I can’t wait till the end, I’m gonna throw down the hammer first: former Cleveland Indians “closer” Joe Borowski endorses former Indians manager Eric Wedge as manager of the Cubs. Well no duh, Wedge was the only one who showed any [...]
