I think that the Indians signed Kotchman to be that veteran time-share player to supplement a younger hitter like Canzler or LaPorta. The additions of Canzler and Kotchman don’t instill much confidence in LaPorta’s abilities, but I still view him as the best option of the three for the exact same reasons you stated.
