Indians Woes Continue, Fall To Angels 5-2

The Cleveland Indians dropped the opening game of their series with the Los Angeles Angles by a final score of 5-2. The loss marks the Indians 5th in a row as their record drops to 62-54.

Scott Kazmir (7-5, 4.18 ERA) lasted just 3 innings allowing 5R/ER on 6 hits striking out 3 and walking 1. He made 63 pitches 40 for strikes.

J.B. Schuck led the game off with a single and advanced to third on a single by Collin Cowgill. Kazmir then issued a walk to Mike Trout to load the bases.  Mark Trumbo put the Angles up 2-0 on a 2-RBI single. With 1-out in the inning Josh Hamilton delivered the crushing blow a 3-run homer to put the Angels up 5-0.

Kazmir’s evening came to an end after giving up a leadoff single to Eric Aybar to lead off the 4th inning. Matt Albers came in and got a hand from catcher Yan Gomes who threw out Aybar attempting to steal in working a scoreless 4th inning.

Carlos Carrasco came in and looked better than he has at any point since returning from Tommy John surgery. We have seen this version of Carrasco in many of his starts for the Triple-A Columbus Clippers and it was a relief to see it in a major league game.

He gave the Indians bullpen a much needed rest working 5 scoreless innings allowing just 1 hits striking out 4 and walking 3. He made 57 pitches, 37 for strikes, and recorded 6 ground ball outs.

Jered Weaver (7-5, 2.87) took advantage of a 5-0 lead by attacking the Indian batters and working 7 strong innings allowing 2R/2ER on 6 hits striking out 4 and walking 0.  J.C. Gutierrez came in to work a scoreless 8th and Dane De La Rosa closed the Tribe out working a scoreless 9th inning picking up his first career save.

The Indians only runs came on 2 solo home runs. Michael Brantley hit his 8th homer in the 2nd inning and Asdrubal Cabrera hit his 9th homer in the 4th.

As much of the season has gone the team is up and down and the good news for Indians fans is that team streak appears ready to break out as the last 8 inning of the game were played clean and the offense struck many balls solidly.
