Fangraphs Interviews Clint Frazier

Clint Frazier Has Goals in Mind

Yesterday, Fangraphs posted a fantastic interview between David Laurila and the Indians first round draft pick from 2013, Clint Frazier. In the interview, which is phenomenal in every sense of the word, Frazier explains the adjustments he has had to make since making the leap from high school standout to big league prospect. It provides us with a real in-depth look at what makes Frazier tick and how he views his role and personal development. Based on what was said, it appears the Indians may have drafted something special in Clint Frazier.

Some of the highlights of the interview include:

His thoughts on being drafted by the Indians: “I thought I was going there [Boston], but I‘m happy to be with Cleveland.”

How he approaches hitting: “In high school, it was just ‘see it and hit it.’ I didn’t really think too much because of the competition level. When I got to pro ball, my approach changed. I had to recognize as much as I could, because the pitchers are better; they can do more with the ball and place it wherever they want. I need to know what I’m doing at the plate every single time.”

On curveballs and the approach of opposing pitchers: “When I started seeing better quality breaking balls, it was hard not to sit curveball and just wait for it. That’s not a good way to hit. Now I try to sit on a fastball and react to a breaking ball.”

Speaking about his goals: “I want to be like Mike Trout. I want to be a guy that hurts you in every part of the game. I don’t want to be a guy that’s known for striking out a lot and hitting a lot of home runs with a low average. I want to be one of the best hitters to step into the box…”

Speaking of his power: “In my first at bat, I hit a home run and thought to myself, ‘I’m going to hit 30 home runs in this league.’ I ended up hitting five. I was kind of disappointed hitting five, but this whole year was a learning process.”

The whole interview is really great and is top notch content from fangraphs. If you have the time, I highly encourage that you read the whole thing. If you are like me, you will walk away from the interviewing thinking much more highly of Clint Frazier than you did beforehand. The kid has potential and if he applies himself to getting better the way he says he does, then the Indians may have a future star on their hands. Here’s hoping.
