Charles Brewer Provides Starting Pitching Depth In Columbus

More from Cleveland Guardians News

The Cleveland Indians acquired right handed pitcher Charles Brewer from the Arizona Diamondbacks late Saturday night in exchange for cash considerations.

Brewer spent the 2014 season splitting time between the Diamondbacks Double-A affiliate Mobile BayBears and their Triple-A affiliate Reno Aces. Overall he made 29 starts and posted a record of 11-12 with a 4.46 ERA. He made seven starts with the BayBears (3-2, 2.97 ERA) and 22 with the Aces (8-10, 4.99 ERA).

He was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 12th round of the 2009 draft out of the University of California Los Angeles. In 2009 he was tied for the Bruins team lead in games started with Gerrit Cole of the Pittsburgh Pirates and current Tribe teammate Trevor Bauer.

He made his major league debut with the Diamondbacks on June 10, 2013 against the Los Angeles Dodgers delivering 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.  Overall with Arizona in 2013 he appeared in four games allowing two earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work while striking out five and walking two.

He has good control of his arsenal which includes a 90-mph fastball, curveball, and changeup. The Indians will most likely stretch him out as a starter in camp and he’ll provide starting pitching depth to the Indians Triple-A affiliate Columbus Clippers.

Welcome him to Cleveland and give him a follow on Twitter @CharlesBrewerAZ (which I’m sure he’ll change!)

Some personal notes from the Diamondbacks Media Guide:

First Arizona born player to make their major league debut with the Diamondbacks.

Went to Chapparal High School in Scottsdale where he went 33-0 and led the team to three state titles in his four years and was named Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year as a Senior.

Was 12-10 with a 4.88 ERA in three seasons with the UCLA Bruins.

His brother Connor is a quarterback at the University of Arizona (Video).

Was suspended ten games for applying a foreign substance (sunscreen and rosin mixture) on a baseball when pitching for the Reno Aces in 2012.

Will be 27 shortly after opening day.
