Seattle Mariners Score Late, Beat The Cleveland Indians 4-3

Many players are continuing to make their spring training debut as opening day becomes one day sooner.  One of those players included Brandon Moss, starting at Designated Hitter.  However, the Cleveland Indians came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

Carlos Carrasco started for the Indians striking out two and giving up one run over three innings.  That one run was given up on a solo home run to Brad Miller.  Later, both Mike Zunino and Brad Miller hit a solo home run for a score of 3-0 in the fifth inning off of Bruce Chen who pitched the worse of all the pitchers today.

The Indians offense started to get going in the sixth inning when Yan Gomes knocked in a two run double. In the seventh, Brandon Moss hit his first home run as a member of the Indians tying the score at three.  Moss is a power hitter and with him coming off a hip injury, the site of a home run in his debut is very exciting and fans should be confident he will put up big numbers this year.  Cleveland then gave up the winning run in the ninth due to a sacrifice fly.

What stood out?

As I mentioned above, Bruce Chen had his struggles today which does not help his cause.  Chen did strike out four batters but gave up two runs due to two home runs.  His stat line was not bad overall but with a deep pitching staff and all the competitiveness of other relievers trying to make the team makes each performance that much more important.

Carlos Carrasco is going to be part of the top of the rotation and when providing a stat line like he did today, the confidence that he will keep up productive starts gives myself hope that he can be relied on more than before.  I’m not sure exactly where he will be in the rotation, but my guess is he will be the third starter and may best be suited. However, if he continues to be productive jumping to second in the rotation is not out of the question.
