McAllister solid in start; Brantley cousins have moment to remember

After being named to the Cleveland Indians rotation,

Zach McAllister

went out and showed he was worthy of the job. He threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing only two runs on nine hits in the 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Michael Brantley

finally got off the schneid with his first home run of the spring. That simply means he’s hitting his stride at the right time.

The Indians announced reliever Austin Adams had made the Opening Day roster, ending the last battle for a roster spot. Jesus Aguilar was solid all spring, but as a first baseman/designated hitter finds himself blocked by several players, including Nick Swisher and Brandon Moss. Manager Terry Francona has decided to go heavy in the bullpen, having more options to choose from.

The Brantley family had the chance to enjoy a special moment thanks to Francona, as Michael Brantley got to hand the ball to his cousin Justin as he came in to pitch for the Tribe in his first taste of the big league’s. Justin, who spent his first season at Class A Lake County, couldn’t help but laugh as he got to the mound and saw his cousin waiting for him. The idea was all Tito’s. “I didn’t want to do it, but it’s a dream come true to just be able to be out there with your cousin, a family member, a guy that works so hard. It gives me chills just thinking about it.” Brantley said.

The Detroit Tigers will be without Justin Verlander to start the year, as he makes his first trip to the DL in his career–although it won’t be a long stay. Verlander has been dealing with tightness in his tricep, and has been throwing in hopes of being ready for the season. But delays have pushed him back, and the team has decided to start him on the DL. Bruce Rondon will also start the year on the DL for the Tigers with biceps tendonitis.
