Clevelinks: Cleveland Indians lose to Tigers; hot dogs; and more

The Cleveland Indians called up Jerry Sands and sent down Austin Adams, had their hot dogs ranked number one, and lost to the Detroit Tigers

Jerry Sands made the news when the Tribe purchased his contract from Triple-A. The right-handed outfielder has hit well in the minor leagues, but has struggled at the game’s highest level. Four years ago in 2011, he hit 29 home runs in 418 Triple-A plate appearances. The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Sands, now 24 years old, in the 25th round back in 2008.

To clear a spot on the 25-man roster, the Cleveland Indians optioned Austin Adams to Triple-A Columbus. Adams, 28 years old, made his major league debut last season, allowing seven earned runs in seven innings. Terry Francona will now have twelve men in his bullpen, and will have a deeper bench. This change in tactics is probably likely due to Michael Brantley’s injury. While not injured enough to land on the disabled list – and he was indeed healthy enough to play yesterday — Brantley will need some more rest, giving Sands more playing time.

In more important news, the Cleveland Indians were voted to have the best hot dogs in the MLB. With a March Madness-style bracket, hosted by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, the Indians defeated the Texas Rangers and their Broomstick hot dog in the championship. Fans voted on the best hot dogs until a winner had been determined.

Finally, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland Indians in an 8-4 game. Zach McAllister did not pitch well, as he allowed five earned runs across four innings. Even worse was the 13 hits allowed over that same time-span, although his five strikeouts are a good thing. Michael Brantley and Carlos Santana both hit doubles and drove in three of the four runs, with offseason addition Brandon Moss driving in the fourth.
