Tribe swept by Tigers; Gomes out 6-8 weeks

It wasn’t the best Sunday for the Cleveland Indians. First they learned their young star catcher

would miss 6-8 weeks with an MCL injury. Then followed that by being swept in their first home series, against a team they hope to dethrone in the AL Central.

Losing Gomes is quite a loss, but it’s one position the Tribe may be able to survive the loss with. Roberto Perez will step into the starter’s role, and for the time-being, Carlos Santana has become the backup. Now the question is will the Indians promote from within, or look outside the organization for help. Several teams, including the Cubs and Blue Jays, have backstops they would love to deal.

The Indians made several roster moves prior to the series finale with the Tigers due to the Gomes injury. They recalled Austin Adams and also purchased the contract of Shaun Marcum. Both factored in immediately, as T.J. House was roughed up early by Detroit and saw the showers early. Adams went 2 2/3 innings while Marcum an even five. Each allowed only one run, but the damage was done by then, as the Tribe were swept by the Tigers 8-5 at Progressive.

Things got a bit interesting in the late innings of the Royals/Angels game. After a Mike Trout single, Royals starter Yordano Ventura seemed to stare down Trout at first. A batter later, Albert Pujols doubled, and as Trout slid into home, Trout and Ventura exchanged words. The benches emptied, but that was the extent of the incident.
