Pregame Notes: Cleveland Indians Hope to Avoid Making History vs. the Chicago White Sox

The Cleveland Indians really have to be wondering about that SI cover jinx. That aside, the Tribe hope to avoid making a bit of unpleasant history, as they hope to avoid starting 0-5 at home for the first time since 1902. They were the Broncos back then. Trevor Bauer (1-0, 0.00) will take the hill after nearly being part of history in his last start. The Chicago White Sox will counter with John Danks (0-1, 6.35).

Bauer was impressive in his last outing for the Indians (2-5), as he went six shutout innings as they just missed a combined no-hitter, allowing one hit–a home run–in the 5-1 win against the Astros. After struggling with five walks in that game, Bauer may get some relief as the Sox have walked fewer times this season than any other team in baseball.

Danks hopes to keep the White Sox (3-4) win streak alive, after having a mediocre outing against the Royals last time out. He allowed four runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in the loss to the Royals. They’ll be looking for Jose Abreu to stay hot, as he homered in Tuesday’s contest.

The Indians need to find some offense from somewhere. With Yan Gomes injured, Nick Swisher still out and Brandon Moss struggling–the Indians need someone to spark the offense. That someone could be Ryan Raburn, who is 14-for-42 against Danks in his career with three homers and five doubles.

News and Notes:

  • Jackie Robinson Day will be recognized all across the league on Wednesday.
  • The game is set for a 12:10 p.m. ET start — the earliest either team has played this year. Bauer has fared far better in day games. He’s posted a 3.06 ERA in 15 career day starts, opposed to a 5.30 ERA in 20 night starts.
  • Carlos Carrasco‘s MRI came back negative, and he actually returned to Progressive Field yesterday during the game. He was still able to throw, and it doesn’t appear the injury was serious.

First pitch is scheduled for 12:10 pm ET at Progressive Field.
