Weekly Wroundtable: No Gomes, No Playoffs for Cleveland Indians?

Last weekend, the Indians lost Yan Gomes for six to eight weeks with an MCL sprain in his right knee.

In the ninth inning of Saturday’s game against the Tigers, Rajai Davis tried to score on a bases-loaded grounder to first baseman Carlos Santana. Santana fired the ball to Gomes to get the out at home plate, but Davis struck the leg of the Tribe’s catcher and caused him to twist his knee. On Sunday, the team announced that the injury will cost him the first two months of his season.

With Michael Brantley suffering from back pain, and Carlos Carrasco‘s scary brush with a head injury on the mound, the Tribe have had many minor injury issues during the first two weeks of the season. But Gomes is the first major player to miss significant time during 2015, and his loss hurts both the pitching staff and the offense. Last year, Gomes not only won the Silver Slugger award, but also traveled with Corey Kluber as the Tribe pitcher accepted his Cy Young, because Kluber credited his catcher with part of his success on the mound.
