Pregame Notes: Cleveland Indians’ Shaun Marcum Starts Against Chicago White Sox; First Since 2013

Tribes’ Marcum makes first start since 2013

It’s a battle of old versus new when the Cleveland Indians take on the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday night. The Tribe will send

(0-0, 1.80) to the mound, making his first start since July 6, 2013, and just his second appearance overall. He’ll be opposed by the rookie

(1-0, 4.96).

The Indians (15-23) hope that Marcum can plug the hole in the last spot in the rotation, as he’s been effective at Triple-A Columbus, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.36 ERA in five starts. He’ll be hoping for some offensive support from the Tribe, who have scored just five runs in the last three games after scoring 18 to win the first two against the Texas Rangers. Jason Kipnis has led the offense this month, batting a major-league best .486 in May.

While Marcum is in his tenth season, the White Sox (18-18) Rodon will be making just his third major league start. While Marcum is 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA in his career against the Sox, Alexei Ramirez has been successful, batting 4-for-9 against Marcum in his career.

The biggest threat, as always from the White Sox will be slugger Jose Abreu. Over his 14-game hitting streak, his hitting .333. Marcum hopes to slow the red-hot Sox, who are 8-2 over the last 10 games.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Field.
