Reaction: Shaun Marcum’s Solid Outing Leads to Cleveland Indians Win

In another audition to show that he is the fifth starter for the Cleveland Indians, Shaun Marcum pitched a solid game. He went 5 1/3 innings while striking out five and gave up two earned runs. Seattle Mariners starter Roenis Elias also went 5 1/3 innings, while giving up four earned runs and five hits. The offense for Cleveland got off to a nice start early in the game scoring their first run in the first inning.

Key Moments

With Mike Aviles in scoring position, Nick Swisher hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning to get the scoring going.

Carlos Santana‘s replacement on the roster was Jerry Sands, who took advantage of his playing opportunity. Sands continued the scoring in the second when he hit a two run home run increasing the score to 3-0. Brandon Moss scored on the homer.

Up 3-2 in the sixth inning, David Murphy came up with a much needed base hit, driving home Nick Swisher on the play. Brandon Moss moved to third on the hit.

The Positives

Jerry Sands was called up because Carlos Santana’s daughter was born. The home run Sands hit in the second inning was his first of the season. Santana will be rejoining Cleveland for this game.

This was Shaun Marcum’s fourth game he has pitched for Cleveland this season, with three of them being starts. His pitching performance was pretty good, which should continue to mean more starts for him as the Indians determine what to do with the fifth starter. With outings like this, he very well could be the player the team decides to be in the fifth spot as the season moves on.

The Negatives

Jose Ramirez‘s struggles continue. He went 1-for-4 yesterday. Ramirez is definitely not playing like he was late last season.

What’s Next

Cleveland will go try win another series late Sunday night as Cleveland goes up against Seattle again at 10pm Eastern. Danny Salazar looks to continue his great season as the number four starter for the Tribe. He currently has a 5-1 record with a 3.65 ERA. Seattle will be starting J.A. Happ, who has a 3-1 record and a 3.71 ERA.

After this game, the Tribe goes on the road against AL Central foe, the Kansas City Royal in a three game series. That series is followed by a six game homestand against the Baltimore Orioles and the Seattle Mariners.
