Cleveland Indians Giovanny Urshela Has Break Out Game In Win Over Seattle

Cleveland Indians Shaun Marcum was lights out today, getting the win this afternoon over Seattle and improving his record to 3-1. Marcum was nearly perfect giving up just two hits over in seven scoreless innings of work. He had great stuff all afternoon, but his high pitch count (106 pitches) didn’t allow him to continue into the eighth inning. J.A. Happ got the loss lasting just 2.1 innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs.

Key Moments

2nd Inning

Brandon Moss led off the inning with a double before recent call up Zach Walters drove him in for the first run of the game when he singled to right. It was Walters’ only hit of the afternoon, as he continues to hit just .120 in his limited time with the Tribe thus far.

3rd Inning

Cleveland piled on four runs in the third when Michael Brantley and Ryan Raburn led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Moss then came up and continued the singles, which scored Brantley, and Giovanny Urshela followed suit with a two-run single of his own. Roberto Perez finished the scoring in the inning by plating Urshela on another single in the inning.

5th Inning

Urshela added an extra insurance run in the fifth when he clubbed his first MLB home run, a solo shot to left field, increasing the lead to 6-0.

The Positives

Marcum provided another solid outing for the Tribe. With the amount of games and innings he has pitched, the team could decide soon, if they have not already, whether or not they want to see more out of the veteran or go with him as the fifth starter down the stretch run of the season.

Could this be the first of many great games Giovanny Urshela has in Cleveland? Definitely. Urshela had quite the game with his first home run, two hits, and two runs. Even though his time in the majors has been limited so far, the decision to promote Urshela looks to be a good one with long-term positive effects.

The Negatives

Walters went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts today. He is a player that is going to be playing multiple positions for this team and, even though it is just one game, he is going to need to improve going forward. Having a .120 batting average is something that needs to be adjusted fast.

The Cleveland Indians are on the road tomorrow in Detroit. Cleveland faces the Tigers with Danny Salazar on the mound. He has a 6-1 record with a 3.50 ERA. Salazar has pitched well for Cleveland as the number four starter since being called up early in the season. David Price gets the start for Detroit. He has a 5-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. The first pitch tomorrow is at 7:08 pm ET.
