The Cleveland Indians won and activated Scott Atchison

Yesterday was a pretty good day for the Cleveland Indians, as they beat the Detroit Tigers by a final score of 5-4. Carlos Carrasco, while not recording a quality start, pitched fairly well for the Tribe. Through 5.2 innings of work, he allowed eight base runners and three runs, although his eight strikeouts are most certainly impressive. Cody Allen kept things interesting in the ninth, but he managed to log the save.

This year hasn’t been the best for Allen, who has struggled mightily with his command. His 4.97 walks per nine innings are not good at all, but he does bring the heat, as evidenced by his 13.14 strikeouts per nine. All in all, his 4.62 ERA leaves much to be desired, but other ERA estimators like his work more, with both FIP and SIERA suggesting a sub-three ERA. The difference between his ERA and FIP is the ninth largest amongst qualified relievers.

In other news, the Cleveland Indians activated Scott Atchison from the disabled list and optioned C.C. Lee to Triple-A. Atchison has been out for the past few weeks with an ankle injury. The 39-year-old has not pitched particularly well this year, and his ERA and FIP are both well north of five. While he showed great control before landing on the DL, he still posted low strikeout totals and allowed home runs at a very high rate. Even more concerning, perhaps, is that his BABIP sits at a low .260, but his home run to fly ball ratio of 25% has to come back down to earth.

On the other end of the transaction, C.C. Lee will return to Triple-A. He appeared in one game for the big league club this year and gave up two hits while recording two outs. He has pitched very well in Triple-A, however, and his peripherals portray his work well.

Finally, Katrina Putnam argued Lonnie Chisenhall should reappear with the Tribe shortly. Chisenhall, 26, struggled at the plate this season but showed improvements elsewhere. Despite not stealing any bases, he still showed maturity on the base-paths and, according to FanGraphs, managed to accumulate three runs above average. Also, his defence showed great improvements, and his UZR of 2.7 and DRS of eight both reflect quite positively on his work. For whatever it’s worth, Chisenhall has hit 4-12 with a stolen base in three Triple-A games so far.
