Cleveland Indians take on Pittsburgh Pirates; Carlos Santana’s lineup spot is (still) up for discussion

This season has been a bit of a struggle for Carlos Santana. Nearly all his statistics have worsened this year, with essentially only his defense and base running improving. Although his .211 batting average is dreadfully low, his on-base percentage, which is a better indicator of a player’s value, sits at an above average .347.

Given his diminished power and low base running skills, many fans have argued as to where Santana should bat in the lineup. His on-base skills point towards a spot in the top of the order, but his weak base running and power potential suggest a home lower in the lineup. With this in mind, Katrina Putnam argues that Santana should stay in his current lineup spot: the five-hole.

Where Santana should hit in the lineup has long been a topic of discussion here at Wahoo’s on First. Two months ago, the Wroundtable debated the then new lineup featuring Santana batting second; and way back in March, Kyle Downing tried to find the best spot for the switch-hitter. While he ultimately decided upon Santana batting second, a poll of readers said that they preferred him batting cleanup, and just 6% of voters wanted him to bat fifth.

Finally, the Cleveland Indians took on the Pittsburgh Pirates last night in the first of a three-game set. Both Trevor Bauer and Charlie Morton had scuffled a bit entering the game, but Bauer managed to get off to a solid starting. The Tribe struck first when Brandon Moss slugged a two-run home run in the second inning off Morton.
