The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates by a final score of 5-3 yesterday. Although the team managed to get to an early 3-0 lead by the end of the third inning, Danny Salazar fell apart in the fifth inning. Allowing five earned runs across 4.2 innings, the right-hander raised his season ERA to 4.10. Despite suffering the loss and allowing eight base runners, he did strikeout seven batters.

So far this season, Salazar has posted a high ERA despite posting stellar peripherals. His 10.65 strikeouts per nine innings and 2.53 walks per innings paint a very nice picture, and they combine to produce a 3.53 FIP, 3.02 xFIP, and 2.90 SIERA. Salazar seems to be suffering the same fate as last season, when he posted a high ERA and low ERA estimators.

In other news, the Cleveland Indians demoted Lonnie Chisenhall a month ago, and he is still playing in Triple-A. Across 21 minor league games, Chisenhall has continued to dominate Triple-A pitching with a .309/.371/.469 slash-line. With the 26-year-old playing well in the minors, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com wondered what the next move for Lonnie Chisenhall is. As he notes, the youngster could make an interesting trade piece for teams searching for bench power or a reclamation project.

Also, Giovanny Urshela’s 13-game hitting streak ended in yesterday’s loss to the Pirates. Since being called up to replace Lonnie Chisenhall, Urshela has batted .274 with a solid .321 on-base percentage. While he lacks in the power department, it is still refreshing to see a player get on base frequently.

On a final note, Jason Kipnis did not receive the starting spot in the All-Star game. As many fans know, Omar Infante and Jose Altuve had received many more votes entering the final update, despite Kipnis’ superior level of play. Hopefully, Kipnis will make the team on a reserve role.
