Indians News: Jose Ramirez replaces Mike Aviles on big league roster

The Cleveland Indians recalled shortstop Jose Ramirez from Triple-A today in a move concurrent with sending utility man Mike Aviles back on the Family Medical Emergency List. 

Ramirez will begin his second stint in Cleveland this season. After posting a .262/.300/.346 slash-line in 2014, Ramirez was largely disappointing for the Tribe in 2015. He was optioned to Triple-A on June 7 after hitting just .180 in 46 games with the big league club. Since being sent to Columbus, though, Ramirez has caught fire. He is hitting .349 with seven doubles, three triples, a home run and 13 stolen bases in 28 games while playing shortstop, second base and left field.

No matter his production in Cleveland this time around, Ramirez is unlikely to get another shot at the full-time job with the emergence of Francisco Lindor. His short-term future with the Tribe seems more like a tryout to either supplant Aviles as the utility man or increase his trade value at the July 31 Trade Deadline.

While the reasoning behind the most recent move is still unknown, Aviles was put on the Family Medical Emergency List in early-May after learning his daughter had been diagnosed with leukemia. At that time, Aviles spent the maximum allowed seven days on the list before hitting the Restricted List for an additional three days.

Aviles is hitting .250 with four home runs and nine RBIs in 54 games for the Indians this season.

Ramirez is not in the lineup tonight as the Tribe looks for its 11th win in the last 14 games.
