Cleveland Indians Once Again Fail to Support Kluber in Loss

Kluber again on the wrong side of run-support

The Cleveland Indians have been a streaky team this season. And it seems that Corey Kluber pitches when those streaks on offense are of the non-scoring variety. Kluber was again solid, allowing just two runs over eight innings. But the offense could muster just two hits as the Oakland A’s Sonny Gray went the distance in the 2-0 loss.

Wins and losses don’t define pitchers in the same way that they used to, as sabermetrics have helped to expand a pitcher’s value beyond that. And Kluber has become the poster child for that this season. There may not be a pitcher who has pitched better, but has gotten as any poor outcomes as Kluber. The defense was about the only other highlight of the night, as David Murphy made a home run robbing catch on Steven Vogt.

Indians’ farmhand Ryan Merritt tossed a no-hitter in the firsts half of a doubleheader for the Akron Rubberducks. Merritt threw seven no-hit innings (MiLB doubleheaders are always seven innings), striking out three and walking just one in the 1-0 win.

The 2015 All-Star game takes place on Tuesday, and Jason Kipnis will be the lone representative from the Indians. After an injury-filled 2014, Kipnis has been healthy and the numbers have reflected that with a .323 average. He made his first All-Stae appearance in 2013.
