Cleveland Indians Drops Series Opener to Milwaukee Brewers

The Cleveland Indians dropped the opening game of the series versus the Milwaukee Brewers despite a solid pitching performance by starter Danny Salazar (8-5). Salazar pitched six innings, while giving up two hits, three earned runs, and striking out eight batters. Milwaukee’s starter Matt Garza (5-10) did not give up any runs as he threw six innings striking out four.

Key Moments

Seventh Inning

Cleveland was unable to get anything going all game long. Down 3-0 Cleveland’s Yan Gomes hit a ground rule double. With the Tribe’s catcher in scoring position, Gomes ended up scoring when  Giovanny Urshela hit his own double to right field.

When the bottom of the seventh happened, that is when the Brewers broke their lead wide open. The Indians went through four pitchers in the inning. Cleveland did not give up any home runs during that inning, but did give up four runs.

Most notable runs in the 7th: Due to a throwing error by Francisco Lindor, Milwaukee had their bases loaded. Adam Lind hit a single which scored Gerardo Parra. Carlos Gomez then hit another of his team’s base hits which allowed Ryan Braun and Lind to score.

The Positives

Despite not always getting the appropriate run support the pitching staff needs, Cleveland’s pitchers continue to pitch very well. Though they may not get the wins that would have happened if runs were manufactured more often, their pitching staff is something to be excited about.

The Negatives

Runners in scoring position (RISP) should be a statistic teams have success in. Going 1-11 tonight and many previous nights is not going to lead to wins and that is exactly the situation the Indians are in now. Cleveland cannot afford games like this.

The learning curve is going to continue for Lindor, likely heading into next season in some areas. The tough part in watching him thought now is his defense, despite being known as a solid defender. He committed his fifth error of the season tonight, but many positive games are ahead for the promising short stop.

Tomorrow Cleveland looks to split the series versus the Brewers. Cody Anderson (2-1 0.89 ERA) will be on the mound for the Tribe. Anderson has been pitching lights out through his first four starts. Look for him to continue his success. Milwaukee will start Kyle Lohse (5-10 6.17 ERA). The game is set to start at 2:10.
