Kluber finally gets some run support, but coughs up lead in loss to the Angels

The Cleveland Indians have struggled to give Corey Kluber run support this season. On Monday night, they gave it to him early, so you can’t blame the guy for not knowing what to do with it. The Tribe staked Kluber to a three-run lead on a Michael Brantley RBI single and a two-run home run from Yan Gomes. But the Los Angeles Angels chipped away en route to a 5-4 come from behind win.

Michael Bourn helped early, robbing Kole Calhoun of a home run in the first. Bourne backpedaled all the way to the wall, leaping at the last moment over the eight-foot wall to snatch a home run away. The Indians begin a stretch without their best hitter in Jason Kipnis, who headed to the 15-day DL with his sore shoulder.

The Indians may have quietly pulled off the best trade at the deadline, but we won’t know for sure for a year or two. In dealing the struggling Brandon Moss–who quickly found his way in St. Louis with a walk-off game winner –they got in return the Cardinal top pitching prospect– who has slid into the No. 3 spot in the Tribes prospect rankings. Rob Kaminsky, paired with Brady Aiken could give the Indians the potential to deal some of these young arms on staff in the near future–should the right deal arise.

The weekly “Who’s hot, who’s not” series has been a routinely familiar offering. Hot? Jason Kipnis. Not? Almost everyone else. So who is on the lists this week? Spoiler alert: Kipnis isn’t. Not that he wasn’t good, we just felt it was time to put someone else on the list for team morale purposes.
