Cleveland Indians get stellar outing from Kluber; Inside the mind of Trevor Bauer

The Cleveland Indians got another gem from their starting pitching as Corey Kluber completed his second straight game against the Twins, allowing just one hit–a Joe Mauer solo home run. The Indians gave Kluber plenty of support as the Tribe tallied six runs, including a two-run home run from Giovanny Urshela.

With this said, the Twins still sit even with 57 wins and 58 losses, while the Indians have sulked along to seven games below .500. FanGraphs gives the Twins and Indians a 5.7% and 4% chance of making the playoffs, respectively, and this surely cannot be a surprise for anyone given that the Royals have an 11 game lead on the division and the Twins are a surprise contender; the Tribe, a surprise pretender.

In other news, Eno Sarris of FanGraphs.com caught up with Trevor Bauer and investigated how Bauer uses science to improve his pitcher – which should not be a huge surprise to most fans of the Cleveland Indians. What could be a surprise, however, is the actual science behind Bauer’s changes. The piece is very insightful, and it has certainly made me appreciate Trevor Bauer even more.

Despite all his work towards self-improvement, Bauer has continued to struggle this season. After imploding just the other day, he owns a 4.35 ERA and has allowed an extreme 1.47 home runs per nine innings. His peripherals, however, suggest that an ERA around 4.11 may be more accurate.

Perhaps his biggest struggle this year has been remaining consistent in his performance. His ERA of 4.35 quickly drops to 2.83 once one removes the seven starts in which he has allowed five or more earned runs. This certainly does not mean that he’s only been roughly up a few times, and those seven starts account for almost a third of his season. What it does mean, however, is that Trevor Bauer still has a massive amount of potential and that there is no reason to give up on him.
