Cleveland Indians to Activate Gavin Floyd from the Disabled List

Cleveland Indians’ Pitcher Gavin Floyd to be Activated Tuesday

The Cleveland Indians have announced that pitcher Gavin Floyd will be activated from the 60-day disabled list Tuesday.  He’s currently on a rehab assignment, pitching for the Akron Rubberducks tonight.

This will be the first time Clevelanders will get a look at Floyd, who signed with the Cleveland Indians for $4 million (plus incentives).  He seemed to many as a decent option to be the 4th or 5th starter; however, things never worked out as Floyd fractured his olecranon (elbow) and underwent surgery back in March.  It was the same procedure he had last year when with the Atlanta Braves.

He’ll essentially be a September call-up as Tuesday is September 1st, so no 25-man roster move will need to be made. Also, despite being on the 60-day disabled list the Indians will not need to make a 40-man roster move either as the roster currently sits at only 39.

It will be interesting to see how Floyd looks the last month.  While I was not the biggest fan of the signing this past winter, Floyd didn’t pitch poorly in Atlanta and does have a solid big league track record.  He could be auditioning for a job next year with the Indians who could be in the market yet again for a back of the rotation starter given how Anderson has struggled at times and House’s injury.  A minor league deal could be in the cards…

Chris Johnson on the Mend

Floyd won’t be the only Indians player to return Tuesday as they have announced Chris Johnson will also be coming off the 15-day disabled list that day.  He too is currently on a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Akron.  

Johnson has missed the last two weeks after his hand became infected due to a spider bite.  He could come off the disabled this weekend but as mentioned above, Tuesday is September 1st so waiting til then to activate him saves the Indians from having to make another roster move. The right-handed corner infielder could see time versus left-handed pitching in September, possibly eating into the playing time of Jerry Sands and/or Mike Aviles.
