Cleveland Indians: Tribe Beat Sale, White Sox; Martinez Proving His Worth

Indians continue to push Wild Card leaders

With a four-game winning streak and Chris Sale headed to the mound, it didn’t seem likely the Cleveland Indians would snap that streak. After a second inning that saw starter Trevor Bauer throw 12 straight balls and walk the first three hitters? Even less likely. But in the end, Bauer reeled in his issues to pitch seven strong innings while Ryan Raburn homered twice and Mike Aviles once to beat the Sox 3-2 on Labor Day.

The Texas Rangers won their game late last night, holding a 5 1/2 game lead for the second Wild Card. The second half surge continues to be exciting for the Indians after a dismal start to this year seemed to have them out of the postseason picture. More good news is on the way as Carlos Carrasco is expected to be activated from the 15-day DL to start Tuesday’s game. He’s been out since Aug. 21

As the Indians strong play continues, assessment of personnel for next season continues. Another player that can make his mark now is 28-year-old Michael Martinez. The Tribe has had a history of keeping several utilitymen on the roster, and Martinez is one that could fill that role. His performance over this final month could help sway those deciding on his future in Cleveland.

Many eyes in Cleveland will be drifting over to the Rangers’ scores in the coming weeks as the Indians try to chase down Texas for the Wild Card spot. The attention could shift to the Astros as those two teams continue to battle for the AL West lead. In the end, it doesn’t matter who it is. The Tribe need to keep winning, plain and simple.
