Cleveland Indians Minor League Update; Zach Walters to DL

The Cleveland Indians placed utility man Zach Walters on the disabled list yesterday, ending his Triple-A season in the process. Walters, 26, is in the midst of a hot streak and is a big part of the Columbus Clippers’ push for the Championship. On the whole, he has batted to the tune of a .310 on-base percentage with a characteristically low batting average. Interestingly enough, his power output is significantly lower than what he has shown in the past, although a .167 isolated power, the difference between slugging percentage and batting average, is still above average.

Walters has been slightly above average in Triple-A, but this year’s major league statistics has been awful. In 30 plate appearances, the right-hander hit four singles while striking out an impressive 15 times. Incredibly, he never walked, even though he only swung at 37.5% of pitches outside the strike zone, which is still worse than league-average but not by a horrible amount. The biggest problem for Walters has been making contact with the ball, as evidenced by his atrocious 64.6% contact rate.

In other minor league news, the Clippers played a must-win playoff game in the International League Finals. The team carried a 3-0 lead into late innings and won the game. Mike Clevinger carried a shutout deep into the game, and he deserves much of the credit for the win. Jesus Aguilar also had a big night, going two-for-three with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.

On the big-league front, the Weekly Wroundtable returned with the team discussing what the driving factors of the Cleveland Indians’ late-season resurgence. The sole catch was that the responses must not include Francisco Lindor, since he clearly contributed to the playoff push. From Lonnie Chisenhall to Abraham Almonte, see what your favorite writers had to say.
