The Cleveland Indians Have Posted One of the Worst Attendances in MLB

The Cleveland Indians’ offense got off to a big start in yesterday’s game. By the end of the fifth innings, the team held a 7-2 lead over the Boston Red Sox. In a four-run third inning, Carlos Santana continued his solid season with a three-run double to clear the bases. Two at-bats later, Chris Johnson knocked him in with a two-out single.

Chasing Henry Owens out of the game before the end of the fourth inning, the Cleveland Indians got the best of a promising young pitcher. The Red Sox took the now 23-year-old with the 36^th overall pick in the 2011 draft, and he has risen quickly through the minor leagues. This minor league success has not exactly replicated itself in the majors, as he owns a 3.84 ERA, a 4.30 FIP, and a 4.89 xFIP across just 58.2 big-league innings.

In other news, the Cleveland Indians have officially been eliminated from the playoffs. The occurrence was a tough pill to swallow considering that Sports Illustrated picked the team to win the World Series, and the Opening Day roster looked promising. Now, the team’s front office finds themselves in the difficult spot of weighing the probabilities of a successful season next year against the young talent that dealing the wealth of young starting pitching would return.

As Nick Blazek points out, this was yet another season in which the Indians lagged in attendance. With Montreal pushing hard to land a major league baseball team, the city of Cleveland may have to face the tough reality of losing the Indians. While the Tampa Bay Rays are the most frequently connected team with Montreal, the Indians’ attendance hasn’t been much better in recent years.
