Clevelinks: Will Francisco Lindor Win ROY?

On Monday night, the BBWAA will announce the winners of their 2016 awards. Cleveland Indians fans will be rooting for shortstop Francisco Lindor to take home Rookie of the Year honors. He faces stiff competition from fellow shortstop Carlos Correa, and while everyone generally expects one of them to win, the Minnesota Twins’ Miguel Sano is also a finalist for the honors.

Even if Lindor doesn’t win, it will be a good opportunity for the young infielder to get some time in the national spotlight. His midseason callup, while exciting to Tribe fans, didn’t receive the kind of attention that a player like the Chicago Cubs’ Kris Bryant did on a league-wide level.

After so many years as a city that is looked at sympathetically in terms of sports, Lindor is a player that everyone can be uniformly proud of. He almost single-handedly turned the team around this season, and without being too effusive in his praise, he’s one of the best rookies the Indians have ever seen.

Correa is very good, and he is certainly deserving of the award himself, but the value of Lindor’s presence on the Tribe is hard to quantify in stats. In terms of overall impact on a team, Lindor is the undeniable winner in the eyes of Tribe fans. Let’s hope BBWAA voters feel the same way.
