The Cleveland Indians promoted a new director of baseball operations in Latin America

Look no further than the recent media storm about Yoenis Cespedes and his signing with the New York Mets to appreciate the excitement of the off-season. As fans, a Tweet or post about nearly anything can cause us to bound down the hall to tell our coworker who just signed which player. But in this state of exhilaration, we often forget other signings that happened just a few months ago, as with that of Joba Chamberlain.

Merritt Rohling points out that many fans have forgotten that the Cleveland Indians have added Joba Chamberlain, who has seen success not too long ago. Merritt continues to wonder if the Chamberlain signing will look like the Jeff Manship contract. Few fans had high expectations for Manship, but he has since become a viable bullpen option.

In other news, Nicholas D. Blazek used past off-seasons to create lessons with our current situation. He noted that in past years, the Indians have hunted for smaller free agents to fix holes, but for some reason we expected them to make a big splash this year. Also from that post, he commented on the pattern that past years have typically provided one “bust”, and he suggested that Mike Napoli could be this year’s failed signing.

Finally, the Cleveland Indians have promoted Koby Perez to be their director of baseball operations in Latin America, as Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reports. Perez will oversee ten scouts in that region, which continues to be a hot spot of talent. As of now, the Indians’ 40-man roster includes seven players that the team drafted or signed from Latin America.
