Jason Giambi to Join the Cleveland Indians as Guest Instructor

The Cleveland Indians have announced that former slugger Jason Giambi will be a guest instructor next week as Spring Training kicks off.

Giambi played for the Cleveland Indians in 2013 and 2014 before retiring from the game and taking last year off.  He was a big part of that 2013 clubhouse and while his numbers left much to be desired (.183/.282/.371) he had some huge moments including the big, pinch-hit walk-off home run from the tweet above.  A home run, I might add, that one could argue saved the Tribe’s season as they did, after all, make the playoffs by just a single game that season.

Giambi had been linked to coaching jobs the last few years, even being considered for the Colorado Rockies’ managerial position after the 2012 season.  There was some speculation that Giambi could join Terry Francona‘s coaching staff after 2014 in some capacity, most likely as a hitting coach.  That, of course, has not happened as the Indians currently employ a pair of hitting instructors not named Jason Giambi.  It will be interesting to see if this is a one-time thing or if this could lead to further work with the team down the line. He sure seemed to like his time in Cleveland and one can’t help but think some players could benefit from his hitting wisdom, especially considering the struggles the team had offensively in 2015…
