The Cleveland Indians have demoted Chief Wahoo

The big news story from yesterday is that the Cleveland Indians will be scaling back the usage of Chief Wahoo as their logo. According to owner Paul Dolan, the Block C will be the team’s new primary mark. Dolan also reminds us that he does not have plans to completely remove Chief Wahoo from the team’s uniforms and apparel, and the logo will still appear on the sleeves of the uniform and on the home caps.

Some fans will react well to this news, saying that it is a step in the right direction. The Washington Redskins have received much hatred over their name and logo, and Chief Wahoo is no different for many. Clearly there is a point to be made that the Native American routinely criticizes the logo.

Other fans feel that Chief Wahoo is a part of the Cleveland Indians’ heritage and that to move on would be to sacrifice happy memories. It is a quick way to identify a team, and the logo is most certainly more visually appealing than a block “C”. Unfortunately, having a discussion of the matter typically leads to an abundance of passion and anger.

In other news, the Cleveland Indians have yet again sold out their home opener, making this the 24th straight season. The Indians have chosen “Only Here” as the branding campaign, and they will commemorate three Cleveland Indians who provided memorable moments. Included in those events are Kenny Lofton’s Spiderman catch to rob a home run, Travis Hafner’s walk-off single in the second game of the 2007 American League Division Series, and Bill Selby’s walk-off grand slam against Mariano Rivera, one of his 11 career home runs.
