Cleveland Indians Crush Cincinnati Reds 15-6

The Cleveland Indians brought out the bats tonight as they crushed the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 15-6. The Indians (18-7) took out some frustration after only scoring four runs in the previous two games combined.  The Tribe scored a season high 15 runs and 19 hits in route to dropping the Reds to 15-23 on the year.

More from Away Back Gone

Tribe starter Cody Anderson proved to be one of the lone sore spots on an otherwise great day for the Indians. Anderson got tagged for runs in each of the first three innings, including a solo home run in the second and a two-run home run in the third that staked the Reds to a 4-0 lead.  After working a scoreless 4th he ran into more trouble, loading the bases in the 5th with just one out. Kyle Crockett came in and wasn’t able to retire the one batter he face, Jay Bruce, who got a bloop single to left that scored a pair. Thankfully for the Tribe and Anderson, Tommy Hunter was able to get a double play grounder to end the inning and maintain a 7-6 Tribe lead. Anderson’s line was one that seems all too familiar this year: 4 1/3 innings, six runs, nine hits and two home runs.

Offensively the Indians had themselves a day against Reds’ starter John Lamb. Every single member of the starting lineup got at least one hit and only Carlos Santana and Juan Uribe didn’t record at least two hits. The Tribe rallied back from a 4-0 deficit scoring four in the bottom of the 3rd and taking the lead with three in the bottom of the 4th. The key play in the game came in the 4th when Jason Kipnis smacked a single up the middle that scored Jose Ramirez giving the Tribe a 5-4 lead. On the play Rajai Davis, who was running on the play, attempted to score and after an awkward slide/step was ruled out at the plate. However, after video replay the umpires overturned the call and the Tribe had a 6-4 lead.

The Indians never looked back even after the Reds nearly tied it in the 5th, the Tribe answered in the bottom of the 6th in the form of a huge three-run home run by Yan Gomes, his third home run in his last three games. After that the flood gates opened offensively for the Tribe. Marlon Byrd smacked a two-run home run to left later that inning making it 12-6 Indians. A pair of sacrifice flies by Santana and Gomes in the 7th made it 14-6 Browns over the Bengals Indians. Finally for good measure, Michael Martinez, who ran for Jason Kipnis in the 7th, got an RBI double in the 8th to drive in Byrd and give the Tribe a 15-6 lead.

The bullpen was phenomenal for the Tribe as well tonight, throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Just as impressive was that the Tribe only needed four relievers to finish off the game after Anderson got knocked off earlier. After Crockett faced one batter, Hunter worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings, retiring all four batters he faced. Zach McAllister then pitched a perfect 7th inning before Dan Otero pitched two scoreless innings to finish it off and seal the victory for the Wahoos.
