The Cleveland Indians have announced that Danny Salazar has been scratched from his next start due to shoulder fatigue. The start, originally scheduled for Wednesday in Seattle, will be pushed back to Sunday in Anaheim.

More from Away Back Gone

Salazar is having the best season of his young career this year. In 11 starts this season, he’s 6-3 with an American League leading 2.24 ERA. He also ranks first in the American League in strikeout rate at 10.67 K/9. Salazar’s last start against Kansas City was pushed back one day with

Carlos Carrasco

starting when Salazar normally would have gone. It sounds like the shoulder isn’t a serious issue but something that’s been there for a bit and the Indians want to make sure he’s 100% before he pitches again.

The Indians will call up Cody Anderson to start in place of Salazar. Anderson will get tomorrow’s start in Seattle with Carlos Carrasco getting an extra day of rest and now starting Wednesday instead of Tuesday. Anderson has had a tough season with the Indians, posting a 6.81 ERA in eight games (seven starts), which is the second-worst in the American League. He has, however, been pitching better of late. After being optioned to Triple-A Columbus, he made a start in Chicago as the 26th man, starting the second game of the doubleheader back on May 23rd. It was his best start of the season, going seven innings allowing just one run and striking out nine.

Anderson has looked very good in Triple-A as well, making three starts for the Columbus Clippers and posting a 2.30 ERA and striking out close to 11 per nine innings. In all likelihood, this will just be a one-start stint for him and he’ll be sent back to Columbus but it’s another chance for him to show he’s a legit big league option should the need arise long-term in Cleveland.

The Indians will need to make a roster move before tomorrow’s game and since Danny Salazar will not be going on the disabled list, the likely candidate to be optioned out is reliever Austin Adams. It’s been speculated Adams could have been sent out this week for Joba Chamberlain, who could return from the disabled list this series in Seattle.
