The Cleveland Indians have officially called up pitcher Cody Anderson from Triple-A Columbus today. As announced yesterday, the Anderson will be making the start tonight in Seattle to give Danny Salazar a few extra days rest due to a sore shoulder. The Indians decided earlier to give Anderson tonight’s start on normal rest to give Carlos Carrasco an extra day off as well as he’s still coming back from his hamstring injury.

More from Away Back Gone

Anderson has had mostly a rough go of it with the Indians this season, posting a 1-3 record and 6.81 ERA in eight games (seven starts). However, he looked like a completely different pitcher in his last start with the Indians. Making a spot start in the second game of the Indians and White Sox’s doubleheader on May 23rd, Anderson pitched seven strong innings allowing just one run, five hits, and no walks while striking out nine. it was hands down the best start of the season for Anderson and one of the best of his short career.

He’s also make three starts with the Columbus Clippers, posting a 2.30 ERA and striking out 10.9 per nine innings.  He’s struck out 19 in his 15 2/3 innings while walking just seven. Triple-A hitters were also batting just .230 off him.  As with his last start, this appears to be a one-time start for him tonight as the Indians expect Salazar to only need a couple days rest and aren’t planning (for now) to put him on the disabled list.

As expected, the Indians have optioned reliever Austin Adams to Triple-A to make room for Anderson on the roster. Adams has spent most of the 2016 season with the Clippers going 2-1 with four saves and a 1.10 ERA in 16 1 /3 innings. He had some ups and downs with the Indians, posting a solid 2.35 ERA and striking out just over 14 batters per nine innings. However, he was the victim of a pair of home runs in just 7 2/3 innings of work.

According to Jordan Bastian (and as speculated a couple times on this site), the Indians had planned on sending Adams to Columbus before yesterday’s game in a move that would have allowed them to activate reliever Joba Chamberlain from the disabled list. However, those plans were pushed back due to Salazar’s shoulder issue. The Indians have delayed activating Chamberlain for the time being; however, he will almost certainly be activated tomorrow once Anderson is sent back to Triple-A.

Cody Anderson will face off against the Mariners’ Wade Miley (5-2, 5.85 ERA) tonight at Seattle’s Safeco Field. The Indians will look to get after Miley like they did in April when they tagged him for nine runs in just 3 2/3 innings. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 pm.
