Cleveland Indians Draft Oregon State Catcher Logan Ice with 72nd Pick

With the 72nd pick in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, the Cleveland Indians selected catcher Logan Ice out of Oregon State University.

Ice was one of the best defensive catchers in this year’s draft class. A three-year starter for the Beavers, he was the defensive player of the year in the Pac 12 in 2016. A 21-year-old switch hitter, Ice stands just 5’9″ and reminds me a bit of former Indians backstop Einar Diaz. Ice is very athletic for a catcher.

While defense is Ice’s calling card, he showed some offensive chops in 2016. The junior hit .310/.432/.563 with seven home runs, four more than he hit his first two collegiate seasons combined. Where Ice really shines offensively is in his plate discipline. In his college career, he walked 94 times while he struck out just 73 times in over 600 plate appearances.

One of the weaker positions in the system, Ice could become one of the best catching prospects in the Tribe’s system assuming he signs. He was a top 75 prospect according to some so demands shouldn’t be an issue (slot is $892,200). Ice joins Will Benson and Nolan Jones who were drafted 14th and 55th, respectively. The draft resumes tomorrow with rounds 3-10 taking place, the Indians have one pick in each round (the 15th pick in round 3, 16th pick in rounds 4-10).
