Cleveland Indians Place Tommy Hunter on DL; Recall Cody Anderson

The Cleveland Indians have placed reliever Tommy Hunter on the 15-day disabled list with a non-baseball injury and recalled Cody Anderson from Triple-A Columbus.

The last time Hunter pitched was back on July 9th (before the All-Star break) when he took the loss in the 11th inning against the New York Yankees. The move to the disabled list is retroactive to then. According to

, Hunter has a fracture in his lower back that he suffered falling down the stairs over the break. There’s no word on how long he’ll be out.

This is the second trip to the disabled list for Hunter this year, after beginning the season on the 15-day disabled list with a core injury.  On the season Hunter is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 21 2/3 innings. He’s made 21 appearances striking 17 and walking five. The 30-year-old is on a one-year, $2 million deal with the Indians after signing as a free agent this winter.

Cody Anderson was originally scheduled to start tonight with the Triple-A Columbus Clippers but got recalled after the long day yesterday for the Indians. Anderson originally made the club out of spring training as a member of the TRibe’s starting rotation, beating out Trevor Bauer. He was sent back to Triple-A after struggling mightily. He’s been called up before but spent some time on the Triple-A disabled list with a sore arm.

On the season, Anderson is 1-4 in 43 1/3 innings with a 7.48 ERA. He’s made nine starts and one relief appearance at the big league level. He’ll be working out of the pen for now, though it remains to be seen how long he’ll be up this time. With the Clippers, Anderson was 0-2 in six starts and had a 4.32 ERA. He did, however, have 30 strikeouts in just 25 innings at Columbus.

Hunter joins Zach McAllister as bullpen arms on the disabled and leaves the pen a bit thin after the Indians finally decided to drop to a traditional seven-man bullpen. Anderson should help give them some length should the need arise today or tomorrow when the Tribe heads to Kansas City. Following the Tribe’s three-game series against the Royals the Indians will get an off day so Anderson may not be around come the weekend series in Baltimore.
