A.M. Wahoo’s: The Sentimental Value of Re-Signing Rajai Davis

The Cleveland Indians did not extend a qualifying offer to Rajai Davis, but can still sign him in free agency this offseason.

The Cleveland Indians had the chance to extend a qualifying offer to Rajai Davis on Monday, but the price was just too high.

The team will have a great chance to re-sign Davis anyway, so it was a smart decision. And after the impact he had on the team all season, it would be wise to do whatever it takes to get Davis back.

But while Davis had a solid season, fans will always remember him for his contributions in Game 7 of the World Series. He only started the game because of Tyler Naquin’s struggles in Game 6, but the move may have been one of the best Terry Francona made all season.

As we all know, Davis hit the unforgettable game-tying home run in the eighth inning, and also drove in a run in the bottom of the tenth to bring the winning run to the plate.

There is a lot of consideration that goes into each spot on the 40-man roster, but bringing Davis back is one decision that shouldn’t be too hard to make. The business aspect of baseball aside, Davis proved he can step up in the most high-leverage situation possible against one of the best pitchers in baseball. What else could a team ask for?

Davis provided fans with one of the greatest moments in franchise history, and having him back next year would be great to allow him to continue to be a key piece of what will hopefully be another championship run.
