The 2012 Cleveland Indians finished 13th in the American League in runs scored with 667 and much of the problem had to do with a lack of power in the lineup. On-base percentage is the key component to scoring runs in baseball, but despite being above league average with a .324 OBP the team still struggled to score. The biggest problem was a power shortage fueled by a lack of home runs (136), which led to a lackluster slugging percentage (.381) and wOBA (.310)—all of which ranked second-worst in the league. Saying that the Indians are in a rough stretch may just be the understatement of the year. It’s been a miserable, miserable month and a half for Cleveland baseball. This is par for the course for Northeast Ohio sports fans, and we tend to be quite vocal in our complaints. But whining and subjectivity aside, just how bad have things been for the Tribe?

The Mathematical Improbability of Cleveland’s 11-Game Losing Streak

Something amazing happened Wednesday: the Cleveland Indians won a game. For the first time in almost two weeks, the ninth inning ended and the Tribe had the lead. The win snapped the Indians’ losing streak at 11 games as they avoided getting swept for the fourth consecutive series. The 2012 season is almost certainly lost now, but boy was it a relief to see Cleveland actually pull one out.

But, unbelievable as the win felt after roughly a fortnight of consecutive failures, the Indians have now accomplished another feat that is actually far more incredible: Losing 11 games in a row. (more…)
