Could Indians, Giants Trade Chris Perez for Brandon Belt?

For the last few weeks there have been whisperings that the Cleveland Indians might trade closer Chris Perez if they fall out of the pennant race before the deadline. Even if they end up buying (or at least not totally selling), Perez would still be an intriguing trade chip; we suggested last week that the Indians and Angels could line up in a Perez-for-Peter Bourjos deal that would make sense regardless of the Tribe’s 2012 plans. Are Indians in on Brandon Belt?

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reported Tuesday night that the San Francisco Giants were “far down the road” on two potential trades. One of the deals turned out to be to acquire Angel Pagan from the New York Mets for Andres Torres and Ramon Rodriguez. But the other is still up in the air.

Meanwhile, Indians GM Chris Antonetti told a group of reporters that he was working on a deal “that would be very surprising if it came to fruition,” according to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian. He didn’t give any more specifics than that.

“I’m pretty sure I could give you 50 guesses,” Antonetti said, “and you probably wouldn’t get it.” I’ll accept the challenge and offer mine: Brandon Belt. (more…)

Winter Meetings Indians Rumors: Recapping Day Two

The Winter Meetings are still underway in Dallas, and after an exciting first day of Indians rumors Monday, we got an even more interesting group of Cleveland-related whisperings Tuesday.

Here’s a list of all the Indians-related news that happened and rumors we heard Tuesday.

Big trade in the works? Antonetti told reporters Tuesday that he was working on a deal that will surprise Tribe fans if it ends up happening. “I’m pretty sure I could give you 50 guesses,” Antonetti said, “and you probably wouldn’t get it.”

Pure speculation on my part, but might the mystery trade be for Giants rookie Brandon Belt? San Francisco reportedly has a deal in the works too, and Belt isn’t guaranteed a place in the Giants’ lineup next year; he’d presumably be the favorite to win the first base job in Cleveland in 2012 and beyond.
