Last month, we at Wahoo’s on First undertook an experiment of sorts. In the hopes of inserting a little democracy into the traditional preseason prospect rankings, we invited fellow Tribe writers as well as our regular readers to submit their own lists of the best young players in the Indians organization. Twenty-two people wrote in with their personal Top 10 lists, with 26 possible future stars appearing on their ballots. (more…)

Dedicated readers who memorize everything I write on this site (hi mom!) could remember that I was very critical of the Indians adding Danny Salazar to the 40-man roster in preparation for the 40-man Rule 5 Draft a year ago. At the time I was perplexed by the decision since Salazar just missed a large chunk of the 2010 and 2011 seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery. But don’t confuse that as criticism of Salazar’s ability, because if the surgery did anything, it made him better. (more…)

Normally, the run up to the Rule 5 Draft is a time for players that seem close to being MLB-ready and have some potential as big-league players to be rostered. In the draft, any minor-leaguer with more than three or four years of MiLB experience (depending on how old they were when they signed) can be claimed and taken by one of the other 29 teams, so each club tries to protect its core prospects by adding them to their 40-man rosters.

That’s why it was so puzzling that Scott Barnes, Danny Salazar and Juan Diaz were added to the Indians’ roster right before the roster-locking deadline on Friday. Rostering Barnes was a no-brainer—he’s a left-handed starter with mid-rotation potential—but Salazar and Diaz are simply unworthy of a roster spot.
