After taking two of three from the Toronto Blue Jays to kick off the 2013 season, the Cleveland Indians now head south for their first crack at the Tampa Bay Rays. To help preview the Tribe’s weekend opponents, I talked to Steve Slowinski, manager of the fantastic site DRaysBay, about some of Rays’ big offseason moves, Tampa Bay’s 2013 outlook, and a couple familiar faces Cleveland fans might recognize this weekend. (more…)

This is one of those seasons the Tampa Bay Rays hope for every year. I’d say their fans do too, but, well, you know. The American League East is typically dominated by two of the richest franchises in the game in the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, and for years the division crown went to one and the AL Wild Card went to the other. This year, the Yankees have been savaged by injuries and the Red Sox are in an admitted down season, somewhere just shy of rebuilding. After all, when you can just spit money at things, rebuilds don’t take long and with the farm system the Sox still seem to have even after a host of trades, they look good for the future. (more…)

So maybe a trip north of the border wasn’t what the Cleveland Indians needed to get back on track. The Tribe scored 10 runs in three games, nine of those in an 11-9 loss on Saturday. The pitching and offense just weren’t clicking at the same time. However, the Kansas City Royals losing to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday is the real body blow. The Indians head to St. Petersburg (Florida, not Russia) to face the Tampa Bay Rays in third place in the AL Central, four games behind the Sox and half a game behind Detroit. These tours through the AL East, even when you skip the Northeast juggernauts, can get tough and going from Toronto to Tampa Bay won’t get much easier.
