It’s hard to be any kind of a baseball fan and not care deeply about the Hall of Fame. More than any other sport, there is an eternal link between modern players and those of previous generations. There is no way to determine whether Peyton Manning is better than Johnny Unitas except for what you saw on the field, but there are reams of statistics where you can empirically compare Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds and make an objective judgment of who was better. When the BBWAA Hall of Fame voting results were announced on Wednesday afternoon, they wasn’t exactly surprising. Analysts had spent weeks predicting that 2013 would be a year without inductees. However, it was still disappointing to see names like Craig Biggio and Mike Piazza receive only a fraction of the votes they deserved solely because writers were too busy using the ballots for their own agendas. As a baseball fan, I am appalled at the Baseball Writers Association of America. I can understand the loathing that some have for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Rafael Palmeiro, due to their relationship to performance-enhancing drugs, but after no candidates were elected in the 2013 Hall of Fame balloting, the voting has reached a new low.
