In all the uproar over the Hall of Fame voting results, an already low-profile trade completely flew under the radar last week as Cleveland traded Jeanmar Gomez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfield prospect Quincy Latimore. It was hardly a blockbuster deal and there’s a good chance fans will never see Latimore’s name written into the Tribe’s lineup, but this was a good deal for the Indians for one simple reason: They turned nothing into something. Questioning the Indians’ Recent 40-Man Roster Cuts

I must admit that I don’t put a lot of thought into the composition of the Indians’ 40-man roster when the 25-man roster of players who can actually appear in games is far more important. There’s generally a pitcher or two and maybe a couple of position players who are worthy of attention because they are prospects or will likely be the first guy called up in case of slump or injury. The rest of these guys I see in Columbus when I go to Clippers games, but if I took the time it would take to figure out if T.J. House is better than Danny Salazar I would most likely be divorced. It’s no secret the Cleveland Indians had an atrocious starting rotation in 2012. By any measure they were historically bad—whether it’s the 5.25 starter’s ERA spread over 10 pitchers, good for fourth worst in club history (and the Indians have certainly posted some stinker seasons) or the 13.94 baserunners per nine innings, or the 14 games in which a starter allowed at least eight runs. The list goes on, and it’s as depressing and interminable as these guys made it to watch Indians games this summer. (more…)
