More than any other sport, there is an eternal link between modern players and those of previous generations. There is no way to determine whether Peyton Manning is better than Johnny Unitas except for what you saw on the field, but there are reams of statistics where you can empirically compare Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds and make an objective judgment of who was better. A group of 49 writers representing 24 different sites cast ballots both for an election just like the real one’s and an alternate election for which the BBWAA’s 10-vote-per-ballot maximum did not apply. The votes have been tallied, and the result is: first baseman Jeff Bagwell is the sole candidate who would join Ron Santo’s widow for induction this year in our Cooperstown.

Forty-four writers representing 26 sites participated in our vote. Each writer was allowed to cast votes for up to 10 of the 27 candidates on this year’s ballot. As with the real BBWAA voting, candidates needed 75 percent (33 votes) to gain entrance into Cooperstown. Players receiving less than five percent (two or fewer votes) would be dropped from next year’s ballot.
