I went to the Columbus Clippers game Saturday night. It is always interesting to watch Indians’ prospects, because sometimes there appears to be little correlation between minor league numbers and major league success. As it happened, there were a number of players on the field that are familiar to Indians fans, although the player I was hoping to see, Trevor Bauer, did not pitch. This was surprising because he had last pitched in Cleveland on Monday. I would have thought the Indians would try to keep him on a steady five-day routine.

Anyway, here’s how things looked: (more…)

Normally, the run up to the Rule 5 Draft is a time for players that seem close to being MLB-ready and have some potential as big-league players to be rostered. In the draft, any minor-leaguer with more than three or four years of MiLB experience (depending on how old they were when they signed) can be claimed and taken by one of the other 29 teams, so each club tries to protect its core prospects by adding them to their 40-man rosters.

That’s why it was so puzzling that Scott Barnes, Danny Salazar and Juan Diaz were added to the Indians’ roster right before the roster-locking deadline on Friday. Rostering Barnes was a no-brainer—he’s a left-handed starter with mid-rotation potential—but Salazar and Diaz are simply unworthy of a roster spot.

Barnes, 24, was the San Francisco Giants’ 8th-round pick in the 2008 amateur draft and came to Cleveland via the Ryan Garko trade in 2009. The southpaw starter went 8-4 with a 3.45 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and a 3.0 K/BB ratio while striking out more than a batter an inning over 18 appearances for Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus in 2011. He has a 3.87 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, and 2.7 K/BB ratio in 423 total minor-league innings. (more…)
