One of the first moves the Indians made after hiring Terry Francona as manager was sending Esmil Rogers to the Toronto Blue Jays for Mike Aviles and Yan Gomes. The Indians dealt away a pitcher whose numbers suddenly jumped off the chart away from his career norms and they were able to get maximum value in a veteran position player and a young catcher who filled an area of need.

Why MLB Should Not Ban Home Plate Collisions

Home-plate collisions are among the most dangerous plays in baseball. The Indians experienced this firsthand recently when they lost backup catcher Lou Marson to the 15-day disabled list with a cervical strain after Tampa Bay’s Desmond Jennings collided with him in the Tribe’s second series of the season. Following the game, Jennings told reporters that he knew his only chance to score would be to try to hit Marson with enough force to make him drop the ball. (more…)

One of the questions we all asked about the Indians last year on a daily basis was “Why is that guy still playing?” The answer, in many cases, was that there was nobody else available, although one could make a case that Russ Canzler, Tim Fedroff or Cord Phelps could hardly have been worse than some of the guys who got hundreds of at-bats last year.
