In all the uproar over the Hall of Fame voting results, an already low-profile trade completely flew under the radar last week as Cleveland traded Jeanmar Gomez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfield prospect Quincy Latimore. It was hardly a blockbuster deal and there’s a good chance fans will never see Latimore’s name written into the Tribe’s lineup, but this was a good deal for the Indians for one simple reason: They turned nothing into something. Now that the Cleveland Indians have hired Terry Francona to manage their team it’s time for the new direction of the franchise to take shape. Certainly they will listen to offers on players like Shin-Soo Choo, Chris Perez, and Justin Masterson as they begin on their likely rebuilding project, but nobody on the current roster would be more valuable in a trade than shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.

The tenth week of the season was one to forget as the Indians fell to just one game above .500 with a record of 1-5. The Tribe opened the week a sweep at the hands of the Reds, then came home to open up a series with the Pirates with a win before dropping the next two. (more…)
