I went to the Columbus Clippers game Saturday night. It is always interesting to watch Indians’ prospects, because sometimes there appears to be little correlation between minor league numbers and major league success. As it happened, there were a number of players on the field that are familiar to Indians fans, although the player I was hoping to see, Trevor Bauer, did not pitch. This was surprising because he had last pitched in Cleveland on Monday. I would have thought the Indians would try to keep him on a steady five-day routine.

Questioning the Indians’ Recent 40-Man Roster Cuts

I must admit that I don’t put a lot of thought into the composition of the Indians’ 40-man roster when the 25-man roster of players who can actually appear in games is far more important. There’s generally a pitcher or two and maybe a couple of position players who are worthy of attention because they are prospects or will likely be the first guy called up in case of slump or injury. The rest of these guys I see in Columbus when I go to Clippers games, but if I took the time it would take to figure out if T.J. House is better than Danny Salazar I would most likely be divorced. Who Plays Right Field if Indians Can’t Sign Nick Swisher?

The big story on Tuesday may have been free agent Nick Swisher’s visit to Progressive Field, but in other news, the team also made the decision to designate outfielder Russ Canzler for assignment. If the Indians cannot land Swisher, they will need to choose another right fielder before the season starts. Although Canzler seemed like the most probable in-house choice, he is no longer an option.
